''Birthday''
2013-01-17 09:37:04We stayed at this lovely Inn for a 2 day trip to celebrate my birthday 12th January. Very warm welcome, refurbished room beautiful, staff friendly and very hardworking. Lovely food on both nights and my husband appreciated the real ale choices. We had to cut our 3 day visit one day short due to severe weather warning but would certainly book again.
Log fire and papers great treat..
Well done all of you..
''Excellent find!''
2013-01-09 08:44:36Our party stayed in little arrow for a new year break just down the road.Nice 15 min walk to this pub and we were not disappointed Food was excellent and could not fault it. We had a lunch time meal and a Sunday dinner and both meals were superb, Kathy and the staff could not of been more helpful We hope to return one day and maybe stay in the cottage. Will be spreading the word about this lovely pub.
''Great find!''
2013-01-07 09:25:32Lovely warm, friendly, traditional pub. Food is interesting, plentiful and cooked to a very high standard. Don’t miss trying the rack of ribs! The staff are friendly and very attentive. Once we discovered The Wilsons we ate there every night for the remainder of our holiday in Torver, and are now planning a weekend with friends to stay in this delightful pub. Would highly recommend a visit.
''The best of local produce with a smile''
2013-01-04 08:30:13A super experience which added value to our lil holiday in Grasmere. Only a short journey to this friendly and uniquely decorated pub down the road. We would highly recommend visiting this area of coniston to experience the selection of beverages and fine dining on offer. The fillet steak was perfectly cooked and chef’s choice of meat pie just beautiful and very filling. Service second to none. They cater for large parties also. Get yourselves there!!
''2 men, 2 women & a dog!''
2013-01-03 09:34:57After a soggy wet day on the fells we came here for an evening bar meal. Immediately we were impressed with the welcoming & cozy ambiance & settled down near the blazing log fire.
We had been a bit apprehensive about bringing the dog out in the evening, but she was made as welcome as any other 2 footed customer.
We enjoyed some great local beers & a lovely meal made from local produce.
We all chose the burgers which were absolutely amazing-excellent quality, well presented & colossal in size.
Seeing other food coming out of the kitchen, on another of our visits to the lakes we will come back here again & try some of the other lovely looking food.
''Lakeland gem!''
2013-01-02 08:55:08Superb food, beers and wine. Hardworking staff on the ball. A real cosy pub atmosphere in a great location for any outdoor pursuits . Has charm and character that larger places lack. Nice to see the wine list sensibly priced unlike most establishments. We will return!
''Fabulous food, friendly staff and great beer''
2013-01-02 08:51:54On a wet and miserable night 6th December whilst staying nearby we visited the Wilson Arms for a meal ., we were greeted by a friendly and helpful member of staff and I enjoyed a pint of locally brewed beer whilst deciding what to eat.
The menu was extensive with some excellent options to meet all tastes. I opted for the home made pie which really was homemade and very scrummy, served with fresh veg. My partner chose the steak and veg which was enormous and a fine cut of beef.
The real fire and comfy relaxed seating added to the ambiance.
Overall a fabulous meal and much much better than standard pub grub.
''Amazing place'''
2013-01-02 08:48:17Only stopped for a drink and was amazed by how nice it was! Really cute and the staff are so friendly, we were served by a girl called Kelly, she was extremely friendly and made the best hot chocolate ever! The out door heaters outside are lovely. There is a Wii for the kids to play on, free WiFi computers, games and a place to charge up your phone, all for free! I would advise anyone to go! Amazing!
''The full package, superb!''
2012-12-19 10:39:45We stayed in the adjacent executive cottage for the weekend, 5 meter from door to door, perfect!! Absolutely surpassed all expectations. Facilities perfect, complimentary bottle of wine and the recent modernisations are excellent, 56″ flat screen TV, multi fuel burner with hot plate, ideal for chestnuts or warming the mulled wine and mince pies.
We also ate at the pub which provides excellent food, great choice of local ales, log fire, really friendly staff and for the techno minded (of which I am not included) free Wifi and mobile charging.
A must stop off point in the Lakes.
''Amazing Place''
2012-12-18 13:06:04We really enjoyed the whole event, food, service and bar all really excellent! Had a T Bone, which was a special, excellent!!!
''Great lunches''
2012-12-18 12:19:01Had a lunch there last week, I can honestly say it was magnificent, the pork fillets and the fish cakes were delicious. This together with warm and friendly atmosphere in the bar and superb service really made our day. Will definitely come back.
''Worth the trip... Excellent!''
2012-12-18 12:17:10I live in Scotland and went to the Wilson Arms. I went down for a short holiday in the Lake District. The food was superb, they had a selection of award winning beers (which the bar staff allowed us to try before buying!) and the atmosphere and service was also first class. Will definitely be back when I’m down next!
''Great place, better food!''
2012-12-07 08:42:12Lovely place and great food. Well worth moving on from Coniston to Torver! Service and food was great.
''Superb''
2012-12-04 11:38:54Live 10 miles away, called in the other night for a meal. Very cosy with open fire. Staff were very friendly and helpful. My husband had haddock and chips and I had the scampi, the food was excellent including the chips which were homemade. Portions very generous (too much for us). Good choice of beers behind the bar. Very impressed and will definitely return and would highly recommend.
''Wonderful setting, warm atmosphere, great food!''
2012-12-03 08:40:33Lovely pub in the Lake District. Had a delicious meal. Steak was cooked to perfection. Lovely warm friendly atmosphere. Look out for the ladies toilets, worth a visit. Would definitely recommend this restaurant to all.
''Great food, great service and great experience!''
2012-11-30 16:40:46Spent two nights on a mid week special deal, excellent value. We paid £129 for the two nights which included a three course meal on the first night, continental breakfast both mornings and a free bottle of wine if we ate there the second night. No question, we did eat there the second night as the food was so good. If there is a wait for the food, its because it is freshly cooked and we couldn’t fault the first class friendly service we received.
The room was lovely, only thing we would say is that the bathroom required attention, but renovation is planned.
The bar was comfortable, cosy and welcoming and we spent both nights having pre-dinner drinks infront of the lovely log fire.
As a result of our experience, we are planning a return visit soon.

''Enjoyment in The Lake District.''
2012-11-30 16:33:52This was our 3rd visit to The Wilson Arms in Torver near Coniston each time the occasion gets better. The refurbishment is well underway with bedrooms tastefully upgraded and a shower that works and a reluctance to leave it. The ladies’ toilet is a highly creative construction in wood and stone and Lakeland slate and is worth a visit on its own. A roaring fire in The Lounge, splendid service, wholesome food and overall value for money all contribute to an enjoyable stay.Highly recommended with Coniston Old Man sitting nicely outside.
''My birthday Treat Wasn't Long Enough.''
2012-11-28 12:00:07Just returned home after a fabulous but to short 2 days here, our first visit to this great hotel, but I hope it wont be the last. In fact it won’t because we are already planning a return visit in early 2013, our room No 6 was beautifully refurbished lately and the en-suite although small, has been superbly fitted out. The food was faultless unless you think big portions are a problem the breakfast menu took me back to another era, you are simply spoilt for chose. The dinner menus may not offer the wide selection you get from some larger establishments, but I could not find fault with my selections on the evenings we ate there, the service and quality of everything was of the highest standard. All the staff from Fran, Steve, Kathy and Andrew all make you so welcome and can not do enough for you. Add to this the Mid week deal my wife got for my birthday and it adds up to one most memorable visit, cant wait for the next one.
''Fantastic food and fantastic, friendly service''
2012-11-28 11:47:23We walked from coniston and decided to have dinner. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. The desserts of sticky toffee pudding and hot chocolate fudge able were the best we have ever had. The atmosphere was warm and friends, children and dogs were made to feel welcome. There was a roaring log fire which was a pleasure to sit near. A love place.
''Birthday treat''
2012-11-28 11:44:29Spent 2 nights at The Wilsons for my husbands birthday. Fantastic time, nicely refurbished room, very good food, yummy breakfasts and the staff are absolutely wonderful, so helpful and friendly, so big thank you to Kathy, Fran and Andrew. They are also very dog-friendly here too, so ideal for couples like us travelling with their dog. A great two days and we will be back in the New Year!!
''Four out of four''
2012-11-28 11:39:08If you are walking in the Lake District there are four things you want from a pub: a friendly welcome; a fire; good food; and a range of decent ales. Wilson Arms offers all four.
The Arms has an a la carte menu – including some retro touches like prawn cocktail and gammon with pineapple – and a range of daily specials. And it’s refreshing to see that, wherever possible, the food is sourced locally – the menu includes a gallery of local suppliers with their food miles scores.
The food is well prepared and the portions are generous. My choice of whitebait, the Cumbrian classic Lamb Henry and individual Pavlovas was a great success. My companions were equally happy with lamb chops, burgers and fish pie with various desserts.
For entertainment as well as food, look out for Wilson’s quizzes and race nights.
''Good food and fantastic service''
2012-11-19 08:42:57Just spent a week working in Torver and went to The Wilson Arms every night for tea. The food was excellent we were made welcome every night by all the staff but a special mention to Kathy the barmaid who always had a smile time for a chat and is a very good singer. Thanks to everyone.
''Cracking!''
2012-11-16 13:10:49We were looking for a two night stay somewhere we could bring our dog and enjoy the beautiful walks. We took up the midweek deal on offer at the beginning of November which turned out to be a bargain!
On the first night of the offer we had a three course meal which was absolutely cracking! But to be honest, we completely over indulged on the generous portions for the starter and main course that we had no room to try the puddings, which all looked so yummy!
We had the Lamb Henry and the Fish of the day (Lemon Sole) the second night, and once again the food was fantastic.
The room was so comfy and cosy! I always thought, that if we were bringing our dog, we’d be lumped in a sub-standard room, but on the contrary, this room was spotless and inviting!
The staff were fantastic, very friendly and helpful!
I very much enjoyed sitting on the comfy sofa in front of the open fire with a glass of red wine! Wish I could do that more often!
We treated ourselves to a bottle of champagne on the first night, which I presumed was for my partners birthday! But low and behold, I ended up with a beautiful ring on my finger. And I couldn’t have wished for a nicer place for it to happen.
A visit next year is definitely on the cards, I couldn’t recommend this place enough.
''Food is incredible and dog loved it!''
2012-11-16 13:06:42Brilliant food – the burgers especially were absolutely amazing. Portions were so big we didn’t eat the next day! The dog was made to feel welcome too. Price was fantastic. Would love to come back again!
''Our return to The Wilson Arms.''
2012-11-12 13:31:56We had a delightful two night stay at The Wilson Arms in Torver, near Coniston at the end of October. We had previously stayed there about 20 years ago and were very pleased to see that Fran, the manager was still there and the warm and friendly welcome hadn’t changed a bit.
What had changed were the bedrooms! Wow! We stayed in room 4, known as the ‘blue room’ due to the blue LED night lights in the ceiling which gave the room a very relaxed feel. Everything in the room was brand new and the enormous bed was super comfy. There was a large wall-mounted flat screen TV and a DAB clock radio. The en-suite though small was also totally refitted with a lovely full sized glass shower cubicle and the towels were toasty on the vertical heated towel rail. Nice toiletries were also provided.
The food was amazing and we did compliment the chef on more than one occasion. On the first night we had fish and chips to die for and succulent ribs and home made chips. We were spoiled for choice with the desserts but opted for the sticky toffee pudding which was super. The full English breakfast has a well deserved reputation but we chose to have the continental which consisted of a good choice of cereals, fresh fruit, yogurt and lovely local bread and pastries.
The staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. A special thank you to Andrew who drove down the M6 to meet us to return a bag we had left behind.
If you are visiting this area of the Lakes we really would recommend you visit The Wilson Arms to sample the wonderful hospitality there. We hope it won’t be too long before we visit again.
''Thanks to Andrew and the rest of the staff for a wonderful evening!''
2012-11-09 10:23:01It’s our first trip to the lakes and to stumble across this gem of a restaurant/ pub was fantastic. The range of real ales and wines is certain to please! The staff are quick to help and we were served our drinks in front of a open fire with the menu to view at our leisure. When our starters were ready we went through to the restaurant. The starters of crispy squid and oven baked Brie were faultless and flavourful. Then the main event. I had the lemon chicken that was very tasty and beautifully moist and my partner had the gammon with a slice of fresh pineapple that was so substantial that she was unable to finish it. Then without any rush we moved back to the fire to finish off our evening with a cheese board followed by coffee that came with a ( complimentary ) generous slice of fruitcake. Then the bill (this is where you would think it would go all wrong) but no “WELL WORTH THE MONEY” and a good tip for Andrew and the rest of the staff. Thanks for a great meal and a wonderful evening Brian and Tracey, hope to see you soon.
''Friendly accommodating staff, real fire, delicious food''
2012-11-09 10:08:32We came here for dinner on our first visit to the lakes. We popped in on the way back to our cottage for a drink and once we met the friendly bar manager Andrew and saw the real fire and friendly atmosphere we booked a table for two days later. On return we found a wide selection of real ales and wines. A varied menu with a specials board to suit all tastes and a roaring log fire on a cold winters evening. Whilst we perused the menu we were given a complimentary aperitif of olives and delicious bread. We then went through to the cosy restaurant for a meal which did not disappoint All In all a lovely, friendly establishment which we would definately recommend.
''Great location for a break''
2012-11-09 10:04:16If you are looking for a nice break at an atmospheric location don’t look any further. Wilson Arms has it all. Good restaurant with honest local food and a cosy pub/bar area with log fire.
Great to come back to after a long walk in the beautiful area
''Honeymoon Heaven!''
2012-11-09 10:01:57We stayed in No. 3 Wilson Cottages in October as part of our Honeymoon. We picked the keys up at the pub and were shown round the cottage. It was wonderful, a bottle of prosecco and a bouquet of lilies, along with fresh bread and a bowl of fresh fruit greeted us at the dining table and a lovely congratulations message in the blackboard.
Every last detail in the cottage was wonderful, the hot tub made it even more perfect. With only 20 steps (yes, we counted!) from our door to the door of the pub it was rude not to call in. We were given such a warm welcome from the staff, it was as if we had known them for some time. The food was wonderful each time we visited there. I would highly recommend the garlic mushrooms as a starter. Unfortunately we could never manage a desert as the starter and main had us full.
The cottage had every mod con available, dishwasher, hot tub, 57” TV and x box. The only disappointment was that it was advertised as having an iPod dock with speakers in every room. We looked everywhere and couldn’t find it. A few manuals for the gadgets would have been helpful but this certainly did not spoil our stay.
The privacy of the cottage with the warmth and friendliness of the pub next door was perfect. The food spoke for itself! We will certainly stay again!
''We spent little but were treated like big spenders''
2012-11-07 11:16:04Just popped in for coffee – mainly due to the illy coffee sign. The welcome was warm, the coffee, accompanied by a delicious square of fruit cake, was excellent. The cost was most reasonable and the ambiance very comfortable. We were extremely impressed and will definitely darken their door again before we return to North Wales.
