Hoping you all had a brilliant start to the new year and that the rest of the year continues to be just as good!
Here at The Wilson’s we have a lot of plans for 2015 starting off with two new luxury self catering apartments, furnished to the same high standard as our very popular Wilson’s No.3 and The Mews, both will be available to let starting from Easter. We are very excited about these, expect more information about the apartments as they get closer to completion.
Annie’s Retirement For months our extra, extra large resident, Annie, had us all convinced she was pregnant and ready to once again contribute to our ever-expanding family. To everyone’s disbelief it turns out she wasn’t in fact pregnant at all! She was however found to be reaping all the maternity benefits whilst chowing down on a few too many pig’nics! Unfortunately we’re now saying goodbye to Annie as she embarks on her final journey for some well-deserved R&R and all the swine and cheese she can consume in that bottomless pit of a stomach!
Wendy & Piglets On a much lighter note, Annie’s heavyhearted departure is met with some exciting news as we welcome her sister Wendy, along with 10 of her healthy piglets to grace our presence and provide some great entertainment for the summer. Be sure to stop by and see how they’ve all settled in!
Coniston Lake Race With summer once again around the corner, you’ll be given the opportunity to challenge Matthew in a 14 mile bicycle race around the picturesque lake of Coniston. For a £10 entry fee, this feat of endurance enables you to compete for a place on our wall of fame, and every penny will be donated to aid local causes! Upon completing the scenic route, which takes approximately an hour and 15 minutes, you’ll be rewarded with a refreshing pint of cold beer to help soothe the impending fatigue and signify the end of the race. Once your glass is empty, your time will be recorded behind the bar and the winner will be announced once all participants have safely returned!
Last weekend we hosted our first Hog Roast! It is our latest venture to cater for events and large groups. It went down very well and we were scraping the last remnants of pork off the bones (after serving 130 portions). The pork was absolutely delicious! The roast was switched on at 5am, and it cooked slowly all day, which resulted in a perfect round of crackling, melt in your mouth slices of pork, served in a large white roll, topped with a spoon of stuffing and a big dollop of apple sauce. Perfect with a pint of local Ale.
Hog roasts have been cooked for centuries and are performed around the world as celebratory events and traditional occasions.
A Spit/Rotisserie is a method of cooking slowly, over hot coals or a flame over a long period of time. The meat is skewered on a long solid rod and is supported at each end. This is then turned slowly, to ensure an even cooking. In the medieval times, this was done manually, usually a boy, known as a “spit boy” or “spit jack”. Methods of turning the animal on the spit have improved over the years. Dog treadmills, steam power and mechanical clockwork are some of the methods that have been used. Ours is very modern and uses Gas!
We have had a fantastic, busy weekend with the Pub and Deli. All the new stock has arrived and we have been busy pricing, stocking and organising it all so finally we get to open the doors of the Torver Deli!
We have also been looking after a large group of men, staying up at Tranneth, making sure that they were all well fed and watered throughout their weekend. Kirsty and Kieran put out a splendid Buffet for them with food ranging from Beef Curry to local Smoked Cold Meats and Cheeses, Breads and a home made giant Pork Pie.
So now we look forward to what the week ahead holds for us and to welcoming everyone to the Torver Deli, and invite you to come and enjoy the new patio area outside the pub with our very own and unique Wishing Well (Created using the original well dating from around 1838!)
We stayed in the adjacent executive cottage for the weekend, 5 meter from door to door, perfect!! Absolutely surpassed all expectations. Facilities perfect, complimentary bottle of wine and the recent modernisations are excellent, 56″ flat screen TV, multi fuel burner with hot plate, ideal for chestnuts or warming the mulled wine and mince pies.
We also ate at the pub which provides excellent food, great choice of local ales, log fire, really friendly staff and for the techno minded (of which I am not included) free Wifi and mobile charging.
I live in Scotland and went to the Wilson Arms. I went down for a short holiday in the Lake District. The food was superb, they had a selection of award winning beers (which the bar staff allowed us to try before buying!) and the atmosphere and service was also first class. Will definitely be back when I’m down next!
This was our 3rd visit to The Wilson Arms in Torver near Coniston each time the occasion gets better. The refurbishment is well underway with bedrooms tastefully upgraded and a shower that works and a reluctance to leave it. The ladies’ toilet is a highly creative construction in wood and stone and Lakeland slate and is worth a visit on its own. A roaring fire in The Lounge, splendid service, wholesome food and overall value for money all contribute to an enjoyable stay.Highly recommended with Coniston Old Man sitting nicely outside.
