The Wilsons News

We have had a fantastic, busy weekend with the Pub and Deli.  All the new stock has arrived and we have been busy pricing, stocking and organising it all so finally we get to open the doors of the Torver Deli!

We have also been looking after a large group of men, staying up at Tranneth, making sure that they were all well fed and watered throughout their weekend.  Kirsty and Kieran put out a splendid Buffet for them with food ranging from Beef Curry to local Smoked Cold Meats and Cheeses, Breads and a home made giant Pork Pie.

So now we look forward to what the week ahead holds for us and to welcoming everyone to the Torver Deli, and invite you to come and enjoy the new patio area outside the pub with our very own and unique Wishing Well (Created using the original well dating from around 1838!)

A New Locally Crafted Bitter Arrives In The Wilsons Cellar.

As well as our normal range of fantastic, local ales, such as Stringers (from Ulverston Brewery), this week at the Wilsons we are trying a new beer from Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery.  The Radical is a 4.2% rich, hoppy and malty Bitter – perfect with our line caught Whole Trout, oven baked and served with new potatoes and salad.

The Radical has arrived in the cellar and has begun its “settling” process, ready to be served on Wednesday. The barrels are left undisturbed for a minimum of 24 hours to let the sediment settle and to allow the perfect, clear pint to be served.

Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery Co Ltd was established February 2009 by four “local lads”.  A father and son team, who already run a local freehouse in Kirkby Lonsdale, decided to join forces with Roger and Alan, another couple of “local lads”.  All of whom share a passion for “real ale” and a keen interest in establishing a local brewery.  After many months of planning and preparation the brewery was finally installed and is situated at the Old Station Yard, Kirkby Lonsdale.

”Our return to The Wilson Arms.”

We had a delightful two night stay at The Wilson Arms in Torver, near Coniston at the end of October. We had previously stayed there about 20 years ago and were very pleased to see that Fran, the manager was still there and the warm and friendly welcome hadn’t changed a bit.

What had changed were the bedrooms!  Wow!  We stayed in room 4, known as the ‘blue room’ due to the blue LED night lights in the ceiling which gave the room a very relaxed feel. Everything in the room was brand new and the enormous bed was super comfy. There was a large wall-mounted flat screen TV and a DAB clock radio. The en-suite though small was also totally refitted with a lovely full sized glass shower cubicle and the towels were toasty on the vertical heated towel rail. Nice toiletries were also provided.

The food was amazing and we did compliment the chef on more than one occasion. On the first night we had fish and chips to die for and succulent ribs and home made chips. We were spoiled for choice with the desserts but opted for the sticky toffee pudding which was super. The full English breakfast has a well deserved reputation but we chose to have the continental which consisted of a good choice of cereals, fresh fruit, yogurt and lovely local bread and pastries.

The staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. A special thank you to Andrew who drove down the M6 to meet us to return a bag we had left behind.

If you are visiting this area of the Lakes we really would recommend you visit The Wilson Arms to sample the wonderful hospitality there. We hope it won’t be too long before we visit again.

”Excellent watering hole”

Just called in on the off chance for a drink yesterday and ended up staying for a meal. Excellent food, cheery service and ambience.Very reasonable prices.Sat in front of a log fire and dozed off to some good old fashioned rock and roll.

Going home now but will be back near Coniston again next year. Will not hesitate to go back. What a jewel.

lake district weekend break coniston

We stayed here as a group (taking up 3 rooms) visiting the area briefly for a family wedding on Coniston Lake.
The accommodation is perfect, we were lucky to stay in one of the newly refurbished rooms and it was excellent! Lovely decor and fabulous en-suite! Our room was available early in order for our party to get organised for the wedding and it was greatly appreciated!
The continental breakfast was included in our stay and had great choice although some of our party took advantage of the cooked breakfast which was also available.
The staff went out of their way to accommdate us – early check-in and serving breakfast until later just for us!!
Perfect stay and hopefully next time we will be able to stay longer and try out the bar & dinner packages!
