Hoping you all had a brilliant start to the new year and that the rest of the year continues to be just as good!
Here at The Wilson’s we have a lot of plans for 2015 starting off with two new luxury self catering apartments, furnished to the same high standard as our very popular Wilson’s No.3 and The Mews, both will be available to let starting from Easter. We are very excited about these, expect more information about the apartments as they get closer to completion.
Well, it is safe to say Summer is here! The temperatures have been soaring and we have been kept busy with visitors and guests alike. Andrew has been keeping the bar well stocked to help quench the thirst of our weary travelers, while Kirsty and her team have been cooking up a storm, ensuring everyone gets a good plateful of Wilson’s Food and keeping the Torver Deli stocked up.
With the weather being so kind to us the back field is in more use than ever. Annie and her piglets have settled down well and are enjoying their new home. The Pygmy goat and her Kid (named Jack) have arrived to join Annie and the Herdwick Lambs. The bouncy castle is up and the new tables and benches have been assembled. So we look forward to the start of the summer holidays and welcoming you all here: whether its for a plate of Wilsons food, a cold drink, or a room for the night we will be ready and happy to see you.
We have had a fantastic, busy weekend with the Pub and Deli. All the new stock has arrived and we have been busy pricing, stocking and organising it all so finally we get to open the doors of the Torver Deli!
We have also been looking after a large group of men, staying up at Tranneth, making sure that they were all well fed and watered throughout their weekend. Kirsty and Kieran put out a splendid Buffet for them with food ranging from Beef Curry to local Smoked Cold Meats and Cheeses, Breads and a home made giant Pork Pie.
So now we look forward to what the week ahead holds for us and to welcoming everyone to the Torver Deli, and invite you to come and enjoy the new patio area outside the pub with our very own and unique Wishing Well (Created using the original well dating from around 1838!)
The Wilsons now have their very own flock of Herdwick lamb. 99% of all Herdwick sheep are commercially farmed in the central and western Lake District
Herdwick meat is renowned for its distinctive taste and eating quality – this is a natural result of the lambs maturing slowly on the heather and grasses of the Lake District fells.
The meat is succulent, tender and exceptionally tasty with a more gamey flavour than conventional lamb. A scientific study by Bristol University found that the taste and texture of Herdwick lamb was superior to lamb from lowland breeds and that the meat contained beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids. Source
The name “Herdwick” is derived from the Old Norseherdvyck, meaning sheep pasture, a particularly hardy breed they have been known to survive under a blanket of snow for three days while eating their own wool.
In the latter half of her life, the children’s author Beatrix Potter bred Herdwicks and acted as president of the breed association for a time.

A super experience which added value to our lil holiday in Grasmere. Only a short journey to this friendly and uniquely decorated pub down the road. We would highly recommend visiting this area of coniston to experience the selection of beverages and fine dining on offer. The fillet steak was perfectly cooked and chef’s choice of meat pie just beautiful and very filling. Service second to none. They cater for large parties also. Get yourselves there!!
After a soggy wet day on the fells we came here for an evening bar meal. Immediately we were impressed with the welcoming & cozy ambiance & settled down near the blazing log fire. We had been a bit apprehensive about bringing the dog out in the evening, but she was made as welcome as any other 2 footed customer. We enjoyed some great local beers & a lovely meal made from local produce. We all chose the burgers which were absolutely amazing-excellent quality, well presented & colossal in size. Seeing other food coming out of the kitchen, on another of our visits to the lakes we will come back here again & try some of the other lovely looking food.
Superb food, beers and wine. Hardworking staff on the ball. A real cosy pub atmosphere in a great location for any outdoor pursuits . Has charm and character that larger places lack. Nice to see the wine list sensibly priced unlike most establishments. We will return!
Only stopped for a drink and was amazed by how nice it was! Really cute and the staff are so friendly, we were served by a girl called Kelly, she was extremely friendly and made the best hot chocolate ever! The out door heaters outside are lovely. There is a Wii for the kids to play on, free WiFi computers, games and a place to charge up your phone, all for free! I would advise anyone to go! Amazing!
We stayed in the adjacent executive cottage for the weekend, 5 meter from door to door, perfect!! Absolutely surpassed all expectations. Facilities perfect, complimentary bottle of wine and the recent modernisations are excellent, 56″ flat screen TV, multi fuel burner with hot plate, ideal for chestnuts or warming the mulled wine and mince pies.
We also ate at the pub which provides excellent food, great choice of local ales, log fire, really friendly staff and for the techno minded (of which I am not included) free Wifi and mobile charging.
