Summer at The Wilsons

Well, it is safe to say Summer is here!  The temperatures have been soaring and we have been kept busy with visitors and guests alike.  Andrew has been keeping the bar well stocked to help quench the thirst of our weary travelers, while Kirsty and her team have been cooking up a storm, ensuring everyone gets a good plateful of Wilson’s Food and keeping the Torver Deli stocked up.

With the weather being so kind to us the back field is in more use than ever.  Annie and her piglets have settled down well and are enjoying their new home.  The Pygmy goat and her Kid (named Jack) have arrived to join Annie and the Herdwick Lambs.  The bouncy castle is up and the new tables and benches have been assembled. So we look forward to the start of the summer holidays and welcoming you all here: whether its for a plate of Wilsons food, a cold drink, or a room for the night  we will be ready and happy to see you.010

News and Reviews of The Wilsons

We are looking forward to a busy weekend ahead of us with the Coniston 14 (a local run organised by a small committee from the Village).  The Coniston 14 Road Race was established in 1982 and is organised each year by a small, enthusiastic committee supported by approx 100 local volunteers on the day.  Over £20,000 is raised each year and donated to several charities in the area.  Lets hope the snow keeps away for the Runners.  We wish them all the best and Good Luck!

We have also had some fantastic reviews on Trip Advisor lately, so we thought  we would put them here to share with all our readers.  Well done to the Team who work so hard and make all our guests and visitors so welcome with good food.
Reviewed 17 March 2013 NEW

Just spent 2 nights there , it was better than we expected, good log fire to sit up to, the best of staff, excellent home grown food & good menu, very clean all round & modern bedrooms fully heated, the owner, Fran could not have been more helpful, we will go there again in the near future.

“Bargain Break !!”

5 of 5 starsReviewed 13 March 2013
Stayed at the Wilsons Arms for a two night mid-week break, 11/12 March 2013. All staff were very friendly from our arrival right through to our departure, and nothing was too much trouble (even our dog was made to feel welcome). Recently refurbished room was very clean and modern. The 3 course meal that came with the deal on the first night was extremely good, with really generous portions (so generous, that neither of us managed a pudding, so settled for coffee instead!). Although currently going through a refurbishment, there was no disruption to our visit whatsoever. We are intrigued to see the end result of the red phone box ‘fish tank’, and the glass covered ‘well’ that the builders were working on while we were there (hopefully Fran can get the pictures onto the website when they are finished, so that we can see the end result?).

Please pass on our thanks to the team for making our stay so enjoyable

A New Locally Crafted Bitter Arrives In The Wilsons Cellar.

As well as our normal range of fantastic, local ales, such as Stringers (from Ulverston Brewery), this week at the Wilsons we are trying a new beer from Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery.  The Radical is a 4.2% rich, hoppy and malty Bitter – perfect with our line caught Whole Trout, oven baked and served with new potatoes and salad.

The Radical has arrived in the cellar and has begun its “settling” process, ready to be served on Wednesday. The barrels are left undisturbed for a minimum of 24 hours to let the sediment settle and to allow the perfect, clear pint to be served.

Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery Co Ltd was established February 2009 by four “local lads”.  A father and son team, who already run a local freehouse in Kirkby Lonsdale, decided to join forces with Roger and Alan, another couple of “local lads”.  All of whom share a passion for “real ale” and a keen interest in establishing a local brewery.  After many months of planning and preparation the brewery was finally installed and is situated at the Old Station Yard, Kirkby Lonsdale.

Torver Deli and News

We have had another couple of busy weeks at The Wilsons. The beautiful sunshine and warm weather have definitely been welcome and I am sure there have been a lot of visitors and walkers appreciating it too.  The Bar and Restaurant have been busy as well, as the new season starts on a high note.

The Torver Deli is ever so close to been complete, it is looking good and we are all counting down the days until we are ready to open the doors!  We have opened up the newly decorated and refurbished Dining room, which leads in to the Deli.  We like the open feel of it all combining together, to give shoppers/diners a relaxed feel and the chance to peruse the shop/bar at their leisure.

An Update

We have, without doubt , had an industrious couple of weeks at the Wilsons.  To begin with, some of our Herdwick Lambs have been sent to Aireys Abattoir and Farm Shop to be prepared.  The meat has been hanging for two weeks and is now in the pub and on the Menu!  (Hanging the meat for a period of time helps to improve and enhance its flavour).  Our Chefs are preparing the Lamb in various ways to compliment all the different cuts.  We are very proud to be serving our own products and having them enjoyed so much.

The work on the Deli is also coming along smoothly and we are very excited to get it finished and open.  The shelves have been built, the pizza oven is fitted, the doors are in place, the floor has been laid, the Butchers block has arrived, the wood burner is on the way and we are finalizing the last minute touches, signs and lists.  The team involved in the building work has done a fantastic job and we are looking forward to seeing the end result.
